Walter Cutting was born in Timworth Green in 1896 (Thingoe Q4-1896 4A:813), son of Annie Eliza CUTTING. She married David James GRIMWOOD in 1900
(Thingoe Q1-1900 4A:883). In civilian life GRIMWOOD seems to be the usual name, only the Army used CUTTING.
1901 census...As Walter GRIMWOOD, aged 4, he was at Old farm Cottages, Timworth Green with his parents David James GRIMWOOD [26] horsekeeper born Little Livermere; his mother Annie Eliza [27] and brother Alfred [9 months], all except his step-father were born in Timworth. 1911 census...As Walter CUTTING, aged 14, a farm labourer, he was at Livermere Road Cottages, Timworth with his parents; brothers Alfred and Charles GRIMWOOD [8] and uncle Arthur CUTTING [31] horseman.All except his step-father recorded as born in Timworth. The family were still there on the pension card. |

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. The battalion were in action at SHARQAT (in what was to become Iraq) on 28th October 1918. They successfully assaulted the Turkish position, losing 25 % of their number (3 Officers & 35 ORs killed, 2 Officers & 72 ORs wounded); awards - 2 DSOs, 3 DCMs, 11 MMs.
